Although the origins of acupuncture are lost in the mists of time, it’s roots as we know it today originated in mainland China and offer ancient wisdom and knowledge for the treatment of modern-day illness. Treatment is based around the application of heat and the insertion of fine needles into the skin in order to stimulate certain responses in the patient. Many of my patients are surprised by how painless the needles are, and I have even treated needle-phobic people with great success! There is presently much research that supports acupuncture, not only as an effective means of drug-free pain relief, but in the treatment and support of many conditions, both chronic and acute. Although it is traditionally believed to enhance the energetic flows through mind, body and spirit, we also know that acupuncture has measurable effects on the body’s chemical reactions. Stress can sometimes play a large part in a wide range of illnesses, from those that are emotionally based, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and panic attacks, to those that are experienced as physical illness, where the body starts to exhibit it’s own levels of stress (or distress). Acupuncture treatments provide an ideal environment for both the body and the mind, enabling a person’s own natural healing mechanisms to come into play. |
