What is CPD (Continual Professional Development)?

The Health Professions Council defines CPD as “a range of learning activities through which health professionals maintain and develop throughout their career to ensure that they retain their capacity to practice safely, effectively and legally within their evolving scope of practice".

How does CPD benefit you as a therapist?
CPD is a type of post graduate training that ensures that you as a therapist are kept up to date of changes within the industry, and keeps you in line with best practice skills to benefit your clients. CPD can also include product training.

Constant updating of skills is vital to success in any industry. This is especially true in the complementary health industry including beauty therapy and hairdressing. CPD is the way in which you keep yourself up to date with the latest treatments, products, techniques, equipment and business developments. If you are an assessor or verifier, CPD is compulsory, however for all therapists it is equally beneficial to both their clients and the ongoing success of their business.

There is no short cut to keeping your skills up to date and in-line with client and industry demand. The HTS CPD courses will help you, and we will make it as straightforward as possible. Our aim is to approve and recommend courses that meet your particular CPD needs.

Vocational qualifications are the starting point for your learning, extending your knowledge base through CPD further develops your skills. This can be from a variety of different sources to include experience based learning i.e. Case studies as well as professional training. By learning new skills and techniques you will be able to offer more to your clients, ensuring your success as a practitioner. CPD is a continuous process and an important part of your business development.

The therapy industry has become more regulated and self-regulation has been implemented and all therapists are required to undertake CPD training every year. This training is monitored on a point scoring system. CPD is the mark of a true professional. Therapists who want to be taken seriously by the orthodox medical profession should realise that CPD is evidence of their professionalism. CPD is normally calculated on an annual basis. If you are a member of a professional organisation you will be given guidance on their requirements.

The FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists) has the following point scoring system  -  CPD Points Tables.  This information has been taken from the FHT, CPD handbook.
