After graduating I worked in numerous NHS departments around the Midlands in a Senior role.  I have also been the Physiotherapist for various Sports Clubs including the England Rugby Football School's Union.  My experience has shown me that by assessing and treating the body as a whole, problems improve better and more quickly.  By treating the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, nervous system etc., you address all the aspects of the body which contribute to a normal, pain-free movement.  This is more effective than placing too much emphasis on any individual component such as only manipulating the joints, or only massaging the muscles.
