What is Pilates?

Pilates is a gentle non aerobic exercise which strengthens and tones the whole body, improves posture without stressing the joints or heart as well as increasing flexibility and balance. It particularly works on aligning the muscles in the back and abdominals to create a vital support for the torso and internal organs which can provide a significant impact on posture.

Pilates is suitable for men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes. The principles of Pilates were designed to achieve results through the best form possible. It is a quality exercise and done with consistency can produce dramatic results.

Benefits include:

  • A stronger back and ‘core’ muscles
  • A more toned body
  • More flexible joints
  • Better posture
  • A flatter stomach
  • Improved fitness and well being
  • Stress relief and improved sleep patterns

Who will benefit?

It is recommended for some people with lower back problems particularly where lack of strength of the ‘core’ muscles is the   underlying cause of the problem, and is particularly suitable for those who

  • Suffer from back, shoulder and neck problems
  • Have stiffness in joints and muscles
  • Want to prevent injuries
  • Have poor posture
  • Want to achieve the ultimate ‘flat tummy’
  • Who want gentle exercise combined with relaxation

How does it work?

Pilates focuses on improving core strength and improving posture by a series of low repetition, low impact, slow conditioning and stretching exercises.

Core strength centres around back, particularly lower back, abdominal and deep pelvic muscles.
