Acupuncture                 Physiotherapy

Acupuncture-like techniques have been used for over 5,000 years.  According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body's motivating energy - known as qi - moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. The flow of qi can be disturbed by many factors, physical, mental and emotional.  By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and help to restore its natural balance.

Western or medical acupuncture is a more recent development practiced predominantly by doctors and physiotherapists and is based more on our knowledge of anatomy and how the body works.  Here at Body Balance our Physiotherapist uses acupuncture as a medical treatment to relieve musculoskeletal pain; e.g. back, shoulder, neck and leg pain, by encouraging the patient's body to heal and repair itself.  It has also been successfully used to treat headaches, migraines, trapped nerves, chronic muscle strains and various kinds of rheumatic and arthritic pain.

By inserting the acupuncture needle, the nerves in skin and muscle are stimulated, which can produce a variety of effects. One effect can be to increase the body's natural painkillers – endorphin and serotonin – resulting in less medication being required.  Another is that the needle can cause an immediate reduction in the tightness of muscles, meaning flexibility and rehabilitation can be achieved more quickly.

Acupuncture can be a drug-free solution to a physiological problem and assist your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
