Craniosacral Therapy
What is Craniosacral Therapy
The brain and spinal chord are bathed in a fluid (called cerebrospinal fluid) which pulsates. A craniosacral therapist is trained to sense these pulsations and determine where restrictions are. These restrictions can cause physical or emotional symptoms. The body's own strength can be used to release these blockages guided by the craniosacral therapist. Different pressures on different areas of the skull bones can cause different problems within the body such as back pain, joint problems, posture issues, headaches, emotional issues and hormonal imbalances. The therapy is truly holistic, recognising that a twisted ankle or knock to the head in childhood can cause symptoms such as migraines in later life.
Craniosacral therapy can release the patterns which cause physical and emotional problems at source. So after the initial session programme you do not have to keep going back repeatedly for more work on the same problems
What happens in a treatment
It's very difficult to describe craniosacral therapy as it is very different for different people. You are clothed during the treatment while a craniosacral therapist touches you quite lightly - it is not a massage. It is often blissful allowing you to sense the changes in your body and releases. Some people feel the fluid movements within their body, heat and beautiful images during a session and afterwards, however stressful their day has been feel much more at ease with themselves. It is extremely relaxing.
Craniosacral Therapy for physical problems
Karen has found craniosacral therapy helpful for many physical problems. She has had success working with the following conditions: whiplash, back pain, tennis elbow, sciatica, IBS and digestive problems, migraines and headaches, gout, cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, bone/joint pain, vertigo, sinusitis, jaw problems, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms and many more.
Craniosacral Therapy for stress and trauma
Craniosacral therapy is actually one of the most gentle therapies for dealing with these sort of issues. It is partially based on the theory of 'cell memory' which works on the premise that different muscles/body cells hold the trauma issues (which can sometimes lead to physical problems) and can be released. Craniosacral therapy trusts the 'wisdom of the body' in that the body will deal with the issues when it is ready and at the speed it is ready. As craniosacral therapy strengthens the body, past trauma may come up but only when you are ready to deal with it.
Craniosacral Therapy for babies
Because the therapy is so gentle it can be used on new born babies. It is helpful for symptoms such as colic and can help where babies cry excessively. If a baby has been through caesarean section, suction, or forceps sometimes the skull bones can be affected and a craniosacral therapist can readjust this using extremely light touch. Childhood problems such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHS), autism, bed-wetting and asthma often respond well to craniosacral therapy.
